Sullivan Center to receive 2011 Driehaus Foundation Restoration Project of the Year!!

Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award for Restoration Project of the Year! The award will be presented at the annual Driehaus Foundation Awards Ceremony to be hled on Saturday, October 29th.

Format for printHarboe Architects' exterior restoration of the Sullivan Center, formerly Carson Pirie Scott Department Store, in Chicago has been honored with the 2011 Victorian Society in America's Preservation Award! The award includes Harboe Architects' restoration of the terracotta facades, reconstruction of the cornice, and cast iron storefronts restoration on the Sullivan designed State Street building, as well as the restoration of the facades of the Haskell, Barker, and Atwater Buildings on Wabash Avenue.

Format for printThe Haskell, Barker, & Atwater Buildings (18-28 South Wabash) have received the 2009 Chicago Landmark Award for Preservation Excellence - Exterior Restoration! The restoration of the exterior of the buildings, which are part of the Sullivan Center (formerly Carson Pirie Scott Store), was recently completed by Harboe Architects and included the restoration of two Louis Sullivan designed storefronts. After a year and a half living and working in North Carolina, Mark has returned to Chicago where he will once again be working at Harboe Architects. Mark previously worked for Harboe Architects from its founding in 2006 until leaving in 2007. Before that, he worked for Gunny in the preservation group at McClier. The Harboe staff is excited to have Mark back in the office!

Format for printDoug Gilbert was recently named the 2009 Francis J. Plym Traveling Fellow by the University of Illinois School of Architecture. The Plym Fellowship affords graduates of the UI School of Architecture a minimum of four months traveling in Europe to study a topic of their choice. Doug will spend 18 weeks meeting with preservation architects throughout Western Europe. His focus will be meeting with those professionals working on the preservation of 20th Century Modernist designs and learning how Europeans are incorporating green technologies into historic buildings. He also expects to better understand how Europeans confront the challenges of adaptive reuse and new design within historic neighborhoods. A sampling of locations Doug will be visiting includes Copenhagen, London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Spain and Greece. Doug's last day with us will be 31 July and he will not return until January 2010.
