  • Date Completed: 2022

  • Client: Dallas Theater Center

Kalita Humphreys Theater in Dallas, Texas, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and constructed in 1959 as one of his last completed buildings. The design was based on an earlier design scheme for a West Coast Theater in 1915 that was never built, and features bold geometry with little ornament. Wright also took the unique approach to eliminate the proscenium in order to create a more intimate setting and designed an ingenious revolving stage consisting of a large cantilevered concrete drum. The theater is currently owned by the City of Dallas and is one of the city’s most significant cultural assets that is in dire need of a major intervention to improve its functionality and reaffirm its relevance to the citizens of Dallas.

In 2021, Harboe Architects was selected to be the preservation architect on a highly qualified team led by the New York based architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The team’s mission was to produce a Conceptual Master Plan for the restoration, preservation, and expansion of the Kalita Humphreys Theater. This document was completed in December of 2022, and the recommended work is currently waiting funding.
