The Merestead estate is located just outside Mount Kisco, NY, and was acquired in 1906 by William Sloane, the president of the high-end interior furnishings company W & J Sloane. Its bucolic setting and proximity to railroad transportation made the estate’s site an ideal location for Sloane’s new country house. The 130 acre site retained a few 19th century farmstead buildings to which Sloane added his own Georgian Revival style country house, a carriage house, a garage, and additional farmstead buildings. While some of the farmstead buildings are in the local vernacular, the main house and some of the support buildings were designed by Delano and Aldrich, which became a prominent and fashionable East Coast architectural firm. Currently the house is owned by Westchester County, New York, but up until 2000, was held by the family. Very few alterations were made on the estate, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Harboe Architects was retained as the historic preservation architect by the New York architecture firm KG & D and completed an extensive historic structure report for the entire estate in 2017. Following the HSR, Harboe Architects prepared construction documents for the exterior and interior restoration of the main house and garage. These documents were modified to include only exterior work, which was completed in 2022. The exterior restoration included slate roof restoration and replacement, masonry restoration, door and window restoration, and exterior wood restoration. The interior restoration project is awaiting additional funding.
