SAMARA, or the John Christian House, is a Usonian house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and constructed in 1956. The house was built for Dr. John Christian and his family, who retained possession of the property up until 2019, when the John E. Christian Family Memorial Trust took over ownership with Indiana Landmarks as co-stewards. SAMARA has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2015.
In 2019, Harboe Architects prepared a Condition Assessment report for SAMARA to address some significant structural issues as well as general wear of the historic fabric. A year later, in 2020, was hired to prepare restoration contract documents for the entire house, which includes architectural, structural, and MEP work. The documents were completed in January 2022 and construction is scheduled to begin in the Spring. The project is partially funded by a Save America’s Treasures grant along with matching funds provided by the John E. Christian Family Memorial Trust.
